Christmas Eves Past

The Tradition
Down through the ages, light from fire has served as a beacon for travelers. Two thousand years ago, shepherds marked the way to the manger of the Christ Child with small bonfires. For centuries, the people of Mexico have gathered on Christmas Eve to light bonfires in the village commons to pray and welcome the baby Jesus.
Early in the 20th century, one family could not prepare their traditional bonfire because of an illness. The youngest child placed a broken candle in a paper bag partly filled with sand and set it outside to keep the welcoming spirit alive.
Luminaires, paper sacks with sand to anchor a lit candle, still line walkways, patios and courtyards across the Southwest and beyond. This bag-and-candle tradition has been celebrated for over 300 years.
Our History
The Alpine luminaires began on Christmas Eve in 1992 as a community beautification project. Over the years it became a fundraiser for Lone Peak High School groups, supporting Eagle Scout projects and Young Womanhood Medallion projects, and in 1997 it helped send the American Fork Marching Band to the Rose Parade.
Now in its 34th year, the Luminaire Committee is proud to support the Lone Peak Color Guard. Every dollar goes to the Color Guard members.
